Wear Your Closet Challenge

Once the holidays are over I always feel an intense need to declutter my house, stop spending money, eat only salad, and purge items from every room. Thank goodness I feel that way for a little while because it keeps my life in order, and we all know I don't feel that way all year long.  This year I am resurrecting an old challenge I created and I think you should try it too.  Here are the rules:

Wear each item from your closet.

This includes: pants, skirts, tops of all types, workout gear, pajamas, etc.  The only thing that is excluded are things you would wear to a wedding and swimsuits, although it's a good time to look at whether you need those too. You should probably do it for shoes too.

For example, you might wear jeans, boots, a cami, a short sleeve t-shirt and a sweater.  Fabulous! Those can all go in the done pile.

After you wear it, and wash it, etc, put it on one side of your closet - the DONE side.  Once you run out of an item, like pants, you can wear all your pants again, but not until you are out of pants.  Keep going on the shirts though until you are done with them.

Here are some other tips:

- If you just cannot figure out what to wear something with, get rid of it.  OR, if for some reason you really love it, put whatever missing piece you need on a short list. For example, I have a red and navy striped dress that I do not have a cardigan for, and therefore never wear.  So I could put "navy cardigan" on my list (but then what shoes?!).

- If you keep trying to put something on in the morning, and keep changing your mind, get rid of it, you obviously don't like it. (Keep in mind Marie Kondo's mantra "does it bring you joy?")

- If you come home and look in the mirror and realize you look ridiculous, or like your clothes don't fit, or you've hated your outfit all day, get rid of it.

- If you have a button missing, small hole, stain, etc - get rid of it.

- If you have 14 pairs of nice dress pants but really don't need that many because you don't wear dress pants every day anymore, wear a few of your favorites for the times you need them and get rid of all the rest.

Keep a count of how many days it takes you to get through your clothes - you will be shocked!  When you are done, you will be rid of clothes you don't like making way for the new.  You will have also rediscovered things you didn't wear as much, but still like.  And you will also likely have a large donation for Salvation Army.

Good luck!

Thoughts for the day....
